Day Tripper: A Day in Brussels, Belgium

The city of Brussels is nestled in Belgium, and it’s one of the best walking cities I’ve yet to encounter. The main attractions were close together, within easy walking distance of each other. I spent a weekend here, but I really think Brussels is a great city that can be experienced in as little as a day! My recommendations for a spectacular Belgian day:

1. Start in Grand Place.

Grand Place is the hub of the attractions, and full of gorgeous, gilded architecture. Check if events are occurring the day you visit; I had the chance to see a jazz festival, a wedding, and a flower market!

2. Check out local art.

Just strolling around Brussels and the center, I stumbled upon some intriguing graffiti, sculptures, and public exhibitions by artists.

3. People watch.

People watching in Brussels is the best. All of the people walking their dogs makes for a great opportunity to get in your pet fix, too!

I could not get enough of this adorable puppy.

4. Learn about the Smurfs!

Brussels loves the Smurfs. These cute little blue peeps were created by Belgian cartoon artist Pierre Culliford in 1958 . The tourism board decided to utilize the Smurfs to gain visitors, and I totally approve. You can visit the Smurfs store and see the massive Smurfs sculpture on display near Grand Place.

5. Soak up Belgian culture in the pastry shops.

Belgium, especially a city hub like Brussels, is known for its artisanal chocolate. Dozens of superb chocolate and pastry shops surround Grand Place and the city as a whole. Even if you’re not looking to indulge your sweet tooth, the elaborate displays are too pretty to miss.

6. Snap a pic of the Manneken Pis.

This tiny little statue is famous in Brussels. A statue showing a young boy peeing, the Manneken Pis is supposed to exemplify the Belgian sense of humor. Personally, I was more fascinated by the fact that this tiny statue/fountain has a wardrobe of over 800 costumes, which he’s dressed in for various occasions throughout the year.

That’s my top six for Brussels! Essentially, just walk around. Walk around and stop to explore everything that catches your attention. A bonus recommendation: feast on a Belgian waffle, with all the fixings!
